Dear reader,
You are welcome in this room whether you arrive with a precise ref code or with nothing but a question that has been bothering your neighbourhood group for months. We wrote this letter so expectations stay aligned before anyone opens a folio. Chalk Ledger is a custodial archive, not a hotline, not a campaign shop, and not a substitute for lawyers when legal strategy is what you need.
When you sit at our table, we ask for your name and a written description of the thread you are pursuing. We do not accept anonymous bulk requests at the counter. That rule protects the people who file sensitive community bulletins with us and protects you — because every handover we issue is a document with initials, dates, and shelf codes you can cite later. Anonymous pulls would break that chain.
We hold material that already entered the public domain: print editions, official digital releases, correction slips, and community bulletins entrusted to the shelf. We do not hold leaks, private chats, or surveillance. If your question depends on material that was never publicly filed, we will say so at intake and record what we searched. We will not fabricate provenance to close a gap.
Our output is always written: a folder label, a method note, and the artefacts or faithful copies we verified. Speed varies. A single shelf pull may finish in one visit; a drift line across three outlets may require overnight comparison. We quote timing before we hold your folio overnight. Rush pressure does not change verification steps.
We file corrections beside originals — ours and theirs. If we misread an edition in a handover, we publish a correction slip on the register and notify you at the email we hold. If an outlet corrected itself, we clip that correction behind the anchor folio without rewriting history.
Copies you make on our print counter carry shelf stamp and date. Bulk digitisation for institutions requires separate terms available at the Drift Desk. Personal data in community bulletins is redacted before shelving; ask if you need the redaction note for your minutes.
This room is hosted in Singapore, maintained by people who live near Tanjong Katong, and governed by written scope in our terms and privacy notice. If anything in this letter conflicts with those documents, the longer policies prevail. Otherwise, treat this as the tone we aim for at the table: plain, patient, and accountable to the record.

About the reading room
The Reading Room is the public face of Chalk Ledger — where letters, portraits, and reader notes explain how we work before you open a currents row or a shelf folio. Feed Vault Drift operates the room as an independent news archive: we acquire, verify, and maintain public-interest material for reading and citation, not for resale as a data feed.
The room occupies the third floor of 358 Tanjong Katong Road, above a row of shophouses whose ground floors still sell the daily papers we sometimes file. Natural light from the east windows falls across the long table shown on our home page; the triptych above introduces the editor who signs visitor letters and the archivist who maintains shelf order. The plant on the sill is real, watered on filing days, and occasionally referenced in margin slips as proof the room is inhabited rather than staged.
We opened the public register online on 13 August 2026 so distant readers could orient before visiting. The web pages mirror the room's indexes — Currents, Shelves, Drift Lines — but the authoritative handover remains the paper stack when you collect at the desk. Think of this site as the chalkboard outside the door.

Who may use the Chalk Ledger reading room?
Any visitor who can describe their question in writing may use the room during desk hours. We serve researchers, neighbourhood groups, journalism students, working reporters, and members of the public. There are no membership tiers, loyalty points, or paywalls on basic shelf pulls described in our standard scope.
Do you accept anonymous requests?
No. Walk-ins identify themselves at the desk; email requests must come from a reachable address we can reply to in writing. Anonymous bulk pulls are outside scope because they break the handover chain we issue for citation. Confidentiality about your research topic is respected; anonymity about identity is not.
What material do you hold?
Public-domain news material, official releases, correction logs, and community bulletins filed on our shelves. We do not hold private correspondence, encrypted leaks, or material that never entered public view. Drift Lines document how public text changed — not how private opinions evolved.
How long does a typical intake take?
Simple shelf pulls may finish within one visit if the folio is on the aisle and unheld. Drift lines and cross-shelf work can require overnight holding while we compare editions. We quote timing at intake and notify you by email if a deadline slips because a second initial is pending.
Can I copy material on site?
Yes, within handover terms. Our print counter stamps copies with shelf code and date. Bulk digitisation or recurring institutional pulls require separate written agreement — ask at the Drift Desk for the short-form memo. Photographing folios for personal notes is allowed; flash is discouraged for aged newsprint.
Do you provide legal or financial advice?
No. We maintain and retrieve public records. Interpretation for court filings, investment decisions, or medical choices remains your responsibility. We can point to what was publicly stated on a date; we cannot tell you how a tribunal will read it.
How do corrections work?
When we err in a handover note or register entry, we publish a correction beside the original without silent edits. Third-party outlet corrections are filed on the relevant shelf, anchored to the edition we hold. We do not rewrite their text — we make the amendment visible.
May journalists cite Chalk Ledger directly?
Yes, with attribution to Feed Vault Drift and reference to the shelf or currents code in the handover. Distinguish our custodial notes from original outlet language when republishing. If you need an on-record comment about method, email the desk — we reply in writing rather than by phone quote.
Where is personal data handled?
Desk intake logs and email correspondence are described in our privacy notice. Functional cookies for maps are optional via the banner; analytics remains off unless you enable it in preferences. We host this site in Singapore.
How do I challenge a filed line?
Email [email protected] with the ref code and the edition you believe we misread. We review against the physical folio and reply within five working days. If you are correct, we issue a correction slip and update the register row.
Before you visit
Read Currents if you think in dates; read Shelves if you think in subjects; read Drift Lines if your problem is republication. Bring identification, your question on paper if possible, and patience for the method. The Drift Desk confirms hours and who reads the mailbox on off-site filing days.
