How stories move through time — not through algorithms

The currents register is Chalk Ledger's temporal index. Where Shelves organise material by subject, Currents organise by when a line entered the public record and how it behaved afterwards — amplification, correction, quiet withdrawal, or drift into a different outlet. Researchers who think in quarters and filing dates usually start here.

Each row below is a live ledger entry as of 13 August 2026. Status codes are plain language: Filed means the handover stack is complete; Drift note means an edition change was recorded; Pending means cross-shelf verification continues. We do not remove rows when a story fades from headlines — silence is itself a current worth preserving.

Reading the register

A current is not a popularity score. It is a filing decision: this thread entered public view in this period and these are the artefacts we can verify. When a visitor asks "what happened to that transport line in July?", we open the July current before we open Shelf B. The current tells us which editions we already compared; the shelf holds the physical or digitised copies.

Drift notes deserve special attention. When an outlet softens a headline between morning and evening editions, or when a community repost drops a qualifying paragraph, we record the delta without declaring which version is "true". Both remain on file. The drift note explains what changed, when we observed it, and which shelf holds each version. That discipline prevents the archive from becoming an editorial voice dressed as neutrality.

Cross-shelf links appear when a temporal thread touches multiple subjects. A coastal consultation might sit in Civic while also linking to Community bulletins that summarise it for residents. Pending status means the link is drafted but awaiting a second desk officer's initials — our analogue to dual verification.

Who maintains the ledger

Feed Vault Drift desk officers rotate currents duty weekly. One officer owns intake logging; another owns drift comparison; a third initials cross-shelf links. The rotation is visible in the margin initials on each row — not for bureaucracy's sake, but so no single reader's habit becomes the archive's blind spot.

We refresh the public register on this page when a handover stack closes, typically within two working days of verification. If you need material that is still Pending, email [email protected] with the ref code. We reply in writing with an expected completion date or an explanation of what remains unverified.

Currents versus live news

Chalk Ledger does not compete with live desks on speed. A current may appear here days after a headline peaks — because we wait for editions to settle, corrections to land, and repost chains to stabilise. Readers who need minute-by-minute updates should follow primary outlets. Readers who need to know what was actually said, and how it moved, belong in this room.

If a thread never produced verifiable public material — rumour without a filed document — it will not appear in the register. We record searches for such threads in private intake logs when visitors ask, but we do not invent currents from speculation. That boundary keeps the ledger trustworthy when it matters in meetings, classrooms, and court bundles.
